From Grass Field to Garden Plot

Here's the process of turning part of the church property into a garden plot.

The Garden Plot- if you look closely you can see the dark green stakes marking off the plot.  It's about 18 feet by 125 feet

On May 7th volunteers from the church gathered to prepare the garden plot.

We used a sod cutter to remove the grass
after the sod was cut, it was rolled up and put in a wheelbarrow

Then the wheelbarrowers took the sod over to  the place where we were laying the sod
when you were pushing a wheelbarrow it sure seemed like a long way away

Row by row, the sod was cut.
We were hard workers- the sweatshirts came off quickly even though it wasn't too warm outside!
The rolls of sod quickly piled up.
We didn't quite cut it straight- good thing we are only volunteers!
The van worked much better than the wheelbarrows to haul the sod
The new home for the sod we cut
All done!!!
The "after" group picture- we got a little dirty.  ;-)

Many years ago this used to be a farm field so the soil is very nice.  We had a local farmer come plow it for us to break up the soil, and then it was all ready for planting.
